 WHAT IS FAMILY COUNSELING?

Family counseling is based on the idea of family members coming together to work toward resolving their shared problems; it refers to the psychological counseling services provided within the framework of the Family Law. The family is an abstract concept, yet it is a holistic and vibrant institution in its own right. A healthy and functional family—and the members who grow up and live within it—can easily adapt to their surroundings, regardless of the society in which they live.

THE OBJECTIVE OF FAMILY COUNSELING TRAINING

Its purpose is to ensure that the family—the fundamental building block of society—can be healthier, more peaceful, and happier; to examine the scientific, cultural, and psychological aspects of the problems faced by family members by getting to the root of these issues; and to ensure the training of individuals equipped to resolve these problems.

The goal is to train professionals who can provide the necessary support to help family members cope with interpersonal issues within the family, as well as life events that affect the entire family—such as death, chronic illness, or a family member leaving home. Family counseling has clear and well-defined goals. The aim is not only to resolve the problems the family is facing but also to help family members develop new skills that will enable them to better understand one another and establish clear yet flexible boundaries.

The impact of a problem experienced by any one family member affects the entire family, and the family as a whole plays a decisive role in the resolution process. It helps people facing relationship issues to more easily cope with personal or interpersonal problems related to their children and family during marriage, separation, and divorce. It is inevitable that problems between spouses will affect the child, or that the child’s physical, psychological, or educational problems will affect family dynamics. The goals of family counseling include providing psychological support to family members, strengthening family communication, and helping family members become more sensitive to one another in resolving these issues.

The purpose of the upcoming 450-hour family counseling certification program—comprising 300 hours of theoretical training, 120 hours of practical training, and 30 hours of supervision—is to train “family counselors” needed by family counseling centers and private institutions across various provinces of our country.
