This program is shared with our students as part of the Student Coaching or Test Prep Program…
The steps involved in the learning process—such as learning to read effectively, quickly, and with comprehension— working with a student coach who will help you realize your potential, knowing how to review effectively, being able to use mind maps, committing what you’ve learned to memory the moment you read it, and remembering information you learned at the beginning of the year with the same clarity by the end of the year—these topics will not only ensure you get off to the right start but will also help you maintain your success over the long term.
Knowing how to study is learning how to learn. In my opinion, this is the greatest gift a person can give themselves. To put it plainly, all these activities—studying, learning, taking notes, writing, and so on—take up a significant amount of your time. Believe it or not, we can list some very important reasons why it’s essential for you to learn how to study. Before explaining why you need to develop study skills, let’s first clarify exactly what we mean by “study skills.” That way, we’ll all be on the same page. So, How Should You Study? First and foremost, you need to know the ins and outs of taking notes in class, how to prepare for tests while reading textbooks in the library or online, and how to create a study schedule.
Where should I start?
“Since you can never monopolize knowledge, you must learn it with the constant fear that you might lose it at any moment.”
Confucius
Acquiring work skills is like competing against your friends on a race track. Before you can determine who the winner is, you must first figure out where the finish line is. In other words, you must determine how capable you are of using these skills. What are you good at, and where do you struggle? Simply knowing the starting line isn’t enough to begin the race—especially when that line is set at different points for each of you! I’ve clearly outlined study skills and how to apply them. I’ve also emphasized that you need to set your own starting line.
Where, how, and when you should study, as well as how to create the ideal study environment for you, are explained in detail. If you’re wondering why this is so important, let’s put it this way: imagine you’re trying to read a novel while simultaneously bouncing a ball off the wall and catching it. Isn’t it normal that three hours have passed and you’re still on the third page? However, if you were reading an article about summer vacation, you’d be able to understand what you’re reading much better. Of course, the most important thing is to have a quiet environment.
We’re not going to give you a magic potion to help you develop good study habits! If you’re not a standout student in math and science classes, “How to Study” isn’t going to turn you into a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. It’s simply not possible to be perfect at everything! But remember, everyone is perfect at something. So you have the chance to figure out which subjects you like and which you don’t. At the same time, you also have the option to be either excellent or terrible at a subject.
The discussion focuses on abstract yet essential elements of your professional life—such as your home work environment, your approach, and your motivation. If you are committed to your work and motivated to achieve specific goals, any factors that influence your work habits will become even more important. Remember, believing in a strong work ethic is one of the keys to success.
